The legend of the Barefoot Bandit: A stolen plane, a burgled store... America's most wanted teenager strikes again

By Mail Foreign Service
12th February 2010

American outlaws are legendary - from Frank and Jesse James, to Billy the Kid, to Geronimo.

Now a slightly more incongruous desperado has joined their illustrious ranks.

Authorities believe that the 'Barefoot Bandit' has struck again after mysterious chalk drawings of bare feet, accompanied by a cheerful 'C-YA', were found drawn on the floor of a burgled grocery store.

A stolen aeroplane was also found abandoned nearby. The legend of the 'Barefoot Bandit' - believed to be a fugitive 18-year-old named Colton Harris-Moore - has grown since he went on the run in April 2008.

He is believed to have carried out a series of robberies at homes and businesses and, despite having never been trained to fly a plane, the theft of two planes.

A Facebook page dedicated to him now boasts 16,800 fans, while a Time magazine piece dubbed him 'America's Most Wanted Teen Bandit.'

Yesterday, the owner of the Homegrown Market store on Orcas Island in western Washington state arrived to find large chalk-drawn feet all over the floor.

Sherri Pierson, who works at the grocery store that was discovered robbed yesterday morning, said cash was taken - and a security system monitor was left in a sink with water running over it.

A series of chalk footprints were drawn throughout the vandalised store.
